How to get over bad days? I really had a bad day today. I hit my head hard from the tv cabinet while cleaning and that was really hard because I was trying to speed up the work. Then I had an argument with my husband and then I received an image from one of my construction sites which was a blunder and needed to be fixed. And then I burnt my lunch.

I had to deliver one drawing, but I couldn’t send it on time because of my son…… Nothing was working according to me, so I was grumpy all day. I clearly knew I was having a bad day. And so I strategically took some steps, that really worked for me.

01-ACCEPT AND EMBRACE

No matter how cheerful and motivated person you are, you are going to face a day where you feel like a failure. You feel like this world is against you and you can’t do anything.

For me, trying to work as an Architect along with my son who is going to be of 2-years this April, is difficult. He is becoming demanding day by day. I can’t even hold a pen when he is around, so working on a system is like I am asking too much. I generally work late at night or early morning to finish my targets.

I have been career-oriented throughout my life, seeing myself not doing anything productive, makes me cranky sometimes.

And then slowly a bad day enters my life where I am angry with everyone and with myself, for being incapable of doing things that I want.

It can happen to anyone. You are a human being, an emotional creature who is trying hard to kick out negativity from your mind when things are not working the way you want. So accept and embrace that this is not your day.

02-DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO GET OVER BAD DAYS

Now that you have acknowledged and accepted that you are having a bad day, you have to take some steps to fix it. Pursue your hobby. I am writing this article because I like writing and when I will finish this post, I will achieve a sense of accomplishment and it will make me feel better.

If you like cooking, cook something delicious, if you like to paint, paint. It can be pottery, it can be gardening, it can be anything that makes you happy. Just leave all your work behind and do things that your heart wants to do.

03-TALK TO SOME ONE WHOM YOU TRUST

Out-bursts are sometimes necessary and required. Talk to someone close to you, someone with whom you can rely on and trust. Take out everything that you have in mind.

During my bad days, I generally call my friend from childhood. She loves me and doesn’t judge me and she acts as a good listener and definitely knows how to cheer me up. Talking to her is therapy to me and one of my ways to turn around my bad days in a good day.

04-PLAY WITH KID OR PET AND LAUGH

Laughing is therapy. These days, I play with my son when I am upset. He makes me laugh and I get overwhelmed seeing his unconditional love.

If I am facing a bad day, I leave everything and play hide and seek or run with him. Kids are so pure and innocent. They know how to laugh and make you laugh.

You can also play with pets if you have one. And if you don’t have a pet, you can watch something that makes you laugh. I liked to watch ‘Friends’ or The Big Bang Theory earlier to make myself laugh. And they never disappointed me.

05-HANG-OUT WITH YOURSEFL TO GET OVER BAD DAYS

This is also one of the best ways to turn around your bad day into a good day. Dress up, look at your best and just go out alone. It’s like spending some time with yourself. You can go to a restaurant or a movie. You can do window shopping or buy something for yourself that you have been thinking about for a long time. It’s like pampering yourself.

I liked to watch movies alone in the theatre with popcorn and cold drink that I rarely bought whenever I watched movies with my friends because I find them over-priced…:P It’s like giving myself a treat. Try it if you haven’t tried it. It’s really fun and definitely helps you to get over bad days.

06-SLEEP AND DO NOTHING

You don’t have to be productive every day. There are days in your life that demand just laying down ideally and doing nothing. Don’t disappoint that day. 😛

Sleeping the whole day and doing nothing for one or two days is not bad when you are making every moment of your weak count. You need a break sometimes and let that bad day maybe a break day.

Don’t think much, I know it’s difficult, but acknowledge this is your bad day, and thinking won’t be a good idea. It will lead you towards negativity. So try to avoid over-thinking and sleep the whole day. It’s spectacular and will turn your bad day into a good day.

07-ORDER FOOD AND BINGE WATCH

Order food that you like and binge-watching can also turn around a bad day into a good day. Order food that you don’t prepare at home. It can be pizza or burger, chocolate or cake.

I like pastries and cake. But I generally get to eat them on birthdays only. So if I am having a bad day, I eat a pastry to make myself feel better and watch my favorite movies or series. I just don’t like watching something new as I am not sure about how that movie is going to turn out. So I like to play safe. 😀

08-TALK TO YOURSELF/ SELF MOTIVATION

Your boss yelled at you and questioned your capability or you lost a work that was just one step away from your hand. Yeah, I know it’s frustrating. But what next? Are you going to consider yourself a loser or are you going to do something about it?

Looking at yourself in the mirror talking positively and sending positive messages to your mind really helps. When you tell yourself that, you are strong, and somebody’s opinion of you is not going to be your reality, it’s going to make you believe that you are strong.

You can also listen to podcasts or youtube motivational videos to get over the negative emotions.

09-TAKE IT OUT

When I was working in an office, there were a series of bad days I was facing and that too every day. Those days were pathetic. I was working in a team where my team leader used to pass personal comments and made fun of me all the time. He would discuss everything but work.

I was doing one task for more than two months and was not assigned anything new even I asked many times. Everybody in our team was against me and I really don’t know why. I used to be quiet all day.

My office incidents started affecting my personal life. I was always stressed up and unhappy. And it continued for more than two months. I was doing my M.ARCH at that time (evening classes) and I couldn’t concentrate there too.

So, one day, without telling anyone, I visited the Associate Director of the office and told him everything I was facing. I took out everything I had in my mind. And he was very kind and listened to me without interfering. Nobody had expected that thing from me, not even me. But I had to do that for my mental peace. It was needed.

And after that, things started working fine. My TL started behaving normally and later on, I was shifted to another office which was near to my place.

So if your bad day is because of somebody’s actions or somebody’s constant nudging with harsh words, face it and revert back. Nobody has the right to demean you and disrespect you. I was late to revert back, but you don’t have to be this late. Shut them in the first place.

10-SHOPPING FOR YOURSELF

Shopping is therapy. I like Myntra and Nyka alot. I buy something for myself to turn around my bad days into good days. It can be a lip color or a new dress. It’s like pampering yourself.

Now shopping doesn’t mean you have half your account balance. Set a limit for yourself otherwise you will grieve over it when your bad day will be gone and it will become a grieving day. lol.

11-EXCERCISE / DANCE AND BURN IT OUT

If you like to exercise, hit the gym, if you dance, just dance. In the beginning, you won’t feel like doing that, but you have to take medicines to feel better, whether you like it or not.

So take a deliberate step, that you are having a bad day, and you have to help yourself to make your day better. After working out, you will feel good and there is no doubt about this.

12-BE PRODUCTIVE

I know it’s controversial after reading all the above points. But for a person like me, I like to be productive in my days. I am an Architect and Interior Designer by profession and I am a writer too by heart.

When I am having a bad day, my creative side towards designing gets switched off, but the writer inside me gets up. I write poems and articles. I sometimes write three to four poems in a row.

Today, I am writing this blog post to make myself feel better. I just can’t go outside and watch movies now, because people and circumstances change with time. Being productive helps me get over bad days and makes me feel better.

13-CHILL AND SHRUGG IT OFF

It’s just a day, and it will pass. You got yelled at by your boss, you had a fight with your spouse or girlfriend or boyfriend, you lost a job, you lost a client, or whatever. It’s still a day and you will get over it.

Yes, you are disheartened and unmotivated today, but you will revive soon. A single incident or moment is not going to define your success or failure. Your efforts will work someday, so get over the sadness, take a break and start working again.

CONCLUSION

Don’t value momentarily break down. It can happen to anybody. Don’t send negative messages to your brain by constantly whining and complaining.

Tell yourself you are having a bad day and you will get over it soon. Help yourself here. Do whatever makes you feel better. It’s all in mind and you can do it. Just take a conscious and deliberate effort.
